
Pia Sundgren is a Professor of Diagnostic Radiology and Co-Director of the Lund University Bioimaging Centre at Lund University, Sweden. She also serves as Head of the Department of Radiology at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University. Her research focuses on advanced MR imaging of the brain, particularly in brain tumors and autoimmune diseases, in collaboration with national and international teams. Her clinical expertise includes CT and MRI of the brain and spine in both pediatric and adult patients. Prof. Sundgren has held leadership roles as President of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Medicine (2018-2019), President of the European Society of Neuroradiology (2020-2022), and is currently the General Secretary of the World Federation of Neuroradiology Societies (WFNRS). She is an acclaimed speaker with over 400 invited lectures and workshops and has supervised numerous PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate students. Her awards include the MICHR Distinguished Mentor Award (2014), the Minerva Leadership Award from Lund University, and the Nelson Mandela Gold Medal (2018) for contributions to radiology in South Africa. In 2021, she was named a Senior ISMRM Fellow for her work in translating MRI technologies into clinical practice, with a focus on brain tumors and autoimmune diseases.
